Screening happens in all Public Sector Delivery points in Kerala, screening for Visible Birth Defects (VBD) in the first 24 hours life, Pulse Oximetry screening with Focused Physical Examination for early and timely Identification of Congenital Heart Diseases (CHD) within 24-48 hours of life, OAE Screening and Screening for IEM after 48 hours but before discharge.

Those identified with Birth Defects are provided with treatment from Tertiary Care Hospitals, DEICs, Specialized centres, etc., and community level, follow up by RBSK Nurses. Other than the screening for Birth Defects among newborn, all children up to the age of eighteen years are screened bi-annually either in Immunisation sites, Anganwadi Centers, schools, or in community settings and documented in the digital platform of Shalabham by RBSK Nurses and referred to appropriate centres.

The National Health Mission (NHM), Kerala, has started comprehensive Screening of children below Eighteen years in line with RBSK Program policy looking for early identification, referral and Management of 4 D’s.
